From Treehouses to Boutique Villas: The Best Airbnb Alternatives for Family Travel
Long-time lovers of Airbnb, it’s pretty rare for us to book a traditional hotel stay nowadays.
Private rentals offer so much more for traveling families, that it’s hard to pass up all that extra space, privacy, and amenities for the same price as a traditional hotel.
When one thinks of private rentals, it’s not surprising that Airbnb is usually the first option that comes to mind. While there have always been private vacation rental sites out there, Airbnb revolutionized the way we look at private rentals, building a travel community that’s much more exciting and authentic. It’s one of the things I love about Airbnb the most!

So why the need for Airbnb Alternatives?
Airbnb is my go-to when it comes to searching for family-friendly accommodations, but the truth is, with our family growing, it can be a little trickier to find the perfect place for us when we travel.
Airbnb’s popularity has increased prices over the years, so it’s not as budget friendly as it once was, especially in popular cities. I’ve also noticed that increased listings options have made it easier for hosts to turn away families by marking their flats as “not suitable for children”. While I’d personally like to be the judge of what is or isn’t suitable for my family, sadly we have a hard time securing our top choice for apartments now that we have a toddler in tow.
Given the added frustration these two factors bring, I’ve begun to look into Airbnb alternatives to expand our rental options.
As you search for family-friendly accommodations for your next trip, these are a few of our favorites Airbnb alternatives worth looking into:

VRBO
VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner) has been around for years as one of the original vacation rental marketplaces built specifically around entire homes, no shared rooms or strangers in the next bed. It’s a place where you can find condos, cabins, beach houses, mountain retreats and more from owners and managers around the globe. With millions of listings, VRBO gives families space and privacy that feels more like “home on the road” than a hotel room.
It’s especially great for multi-family gatherings or trips where a full kitchen, yard or extra bathrooms make life easier. Many travelers love the variety and scale you’ll find, from classic lakefront lodges to sprawling beachfront estates, and how the search tools let you filter by things like pets allowed, number of bedrooms, and amenities that matter on a family trip.

Kid&Coe
Kid & Coe is like that thoughtful friend who totally gets traveling with kids. The platform curates homes specifically with families in mind, meaning listings are chosen based on how child-friendly they really are: think safety, location, and amenities like cribs, high chairs, toys, and open spaces.
You’ll find everything from city apartments to countryside retreats around the world that feel genuinely livable for families rather than just pretty. Because every property is selected through an editorial process (not just whatever gets uploaded), parents can feel a bit more confident about little feet running around and big imaginations staying engaged. It’s a great choice for family trips where ease and comfort are as important as scenery.

Plum Guide
Plum Guide carved out a niche by being very picky: they only accept the top ~3% of homes in each destination after a rigorous vetting process.
Instead of endless searching, you’re scrolling through a highly curated list of stylish, expertly assessed homes in everything from Paris pied-à-terre to California coastal hideaways. Its reach is genuinely global, with over 30,000 handpicked stays across 40+ popular destinations.
What sets Plum Guide apart from Airbnb’s broad marketplace is that quality filter… it’s like walking into a friend’s gorgeous living room, not a gamble on a random listing. That makes it especially good for couples or families who want design-forward, reliable homes; places that feel memorable in their own right.

onefinestay
Imagine a luxury home you don’t just rent, but experience, with concierge service and thoughtful touches you’d expect at a high-end hotel.
That’s onefinestay.
They curate premium homes in iconic cities and destinations around the world (London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, the Caribbean, Italy, and more) and pair them with white-glove service, 24/7 support, and even personal touches like welcome amenities or help planning family activities.
For families who want the warmth of a home with the ease of concierge support (think babysitters or chef experiences delivered to your villa), it feels like the best parts of a private home and luxury hotel melded together.

Villas of Distinction
Villas of Distinction leans into luxury villa life in the most classic sense.
Specializing in upscale villa rentals around the world, you’ll find sprawling estates with private pools, stunning views, and plenty of room for big family groups or special occasions.
Whether you’re imagining a Tuscan farmhouse for an extended family reunion, a Caribbean estate with a chef on call, or a cliffside Spanish villa overlooking the sea, this is the place that does those superb bucket-list homes incredibly well. It goes beyond generic listings: these are properties that, by design, feel like destinations themselves, ideal for family milestones or gatherings where everyone wants their own space and wow moments.

AvantStay
AvantStay is less about listings scattered all over and more about a curated experience: especially for large groups and celebrations. Their portfolio includes stylish homes in sought-after destinations across the U.S., and many come with concierge-level services, tech-enabled support, and design features that feel elevated and intentional (like open communal spaces and resort-style amenities).
Guests often talk about how everything feels smooth from booking through check-in, with teams ready to help plan activities or arrangements that make big group travel feel effortless. It’s an especially great fit for big family trips, multi-generation stays, or celebrations where group coordination and ease matter.

Glamping Hub
If part of your family yearns for fresh air and adventure, Glamping Hub is where you go when “unique stay” matters as much as destination.
It’s a global marketplace for outdoor-centric accommodations – think cabins, yurts, treehouses, safari tents, A-frames and tiny homes – all with comfortable touches that make nature feel luxurious, not rustic.
There are glamping spots on every continent, and you can filter by style, amenities, pet friendliness and more. For families who want to swap screens for stargazing or city bustle for serene forests or beaches, this platform is a curated way to do “glamping” without guessing whether you’ll really sleep well (because these are rentals designed for comfort).

Stay Haven
Stay Haven is a bit newer on the scene and aims to blend stylish, comfortable properties with modern tech-enabled ease. The platform’s homes tend to be tastefully designed and well managed, with an emphasis on comfort and simplicity over DIY booking stress.
What makes it distinct from Airbnb is its focus on consistency: guests can expect listings that feel cared for, easy to access, and supported by responsive teams. It’s a good alternative for families who want a middle ground between boutique hotel service and independent rentals: consistent quality without the unpredictability you sometimes find on larger marketplaces.

KEY.co
KEY.co takes a curated approach with a smaller selection of premium homes and built-in services that help transform a rental into a full getaway experience: groceries stocked before you arrive, private chefs, massages at home, and more. Their team vets properties carefully so you aren’t scrolling endlessly; instead, you get standout homes in beach, mountain and desert locations with concierge-style touches.
For families who want an elevated vacation rental experience that feels more planned and pampered than a basic find-and-book platform, KEY.co is a smart pick, giving you not just space, but moments that feel relaxed and intentional.

Have you tried any of these Airbnb alternatives? I’d love to hear your experiences!

Great listing, we’ve only been using Airbnb during our adventure abroad, but slowly we are trying out other form of home rentals. you’ve included some services that we have not thought about will def. check them out.
Same here, we’re slowly branching out for more options, but Airbnb is where we’ve been comfortable. I just love the community aspect of it. But it doesn’t hurt to have backups!
